In a significant development set to reshape Nigeria’s energy landscape, Dangote Petroleum Refinery, owned by Africa’s wealthiest man, Aliko Dangote, has unveiled an ambitious initiative offering free delivery of petrol and diesel to marketers, dealers, and other large-scale users across the nation. This game-changing programme is expected to kick off on August 15, 2025.
The refinery, which officially began operations in May 2023, aims to revolutionise the distribution of refined petroleum products in Nigeria. A fleet of trucks, including 4,000 brand-new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered tankers, will be deployed to facilitate the delivery of petrol and diesel to various stakeholders, ensuring a smooth and cost-effective supply chain.
In a statement released on Sunday, Dangote Refinery also confirmed that it would provide a credit facility for purchasers. Buyers who acquire a minimum of 500,000 litres of fuel will be eligible to receive an additional 500,000 litres on credit, with a two-week repayment period backed by a bank guarantee.
The refinery has also expanded its investment in the energy sector, with the establishment of over 100 CNG stations, known as daughter booster stations, throughout the country. These stations will be supported by a fleet of CNG tankers, enabling efficient fuel distribution.
“This strategic programme is part of our broader commitment to eliminating logistics costs, enhancing energy efficiency, promoting sustainability, and supporting Nigeria’s economic development,” the refinery’s statement read.
This pioneering initiative is expected to bring about far-reaching changes. By revitalising dormant petrol stations, the refinery plans to boost job creation, stimulate small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and increase government revenue. Additionally, the programme is set to improve fuel access in rural and underserved communities, strengthening investor confidence in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.
Dangote Refinery also highlighted that its goal is to ensure equitable access to affordable fuel for all Nigerians, irrespective of location. “Our mission is to make energy more accessible and sustainable for everyone, no matter where they are located,” the refinery’s statement added.
This new initiative marks a significant milestone in Dangote’s vision to transform Nigeria’s energy sector and could set a precedent for future energy distribution models across the continent.
