Dangote Refinery Denies Importing High-Sulphur Petrol, Clarifies It Was Intermediate Feedstock

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has strongly denied claims that it imported finished petrol with high sulphur content into Nigeria, calling the reports false, malicious, and misleading. In a statement released on Friday, the refinery clarified that the shipment in question was an intermediate feedstock, not finished Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

According to the management, the imported material — a High-Sulphur Catalytic Gasoline (FCC Gasoline) — is a standard blending component used globally to refine cleaner, compliant fuels. The refinery stressed that all intermediate products undergo full refining and desulphurisation at its state-of-the-art facilities to meet both Nigerian and international environmental standards. “Operating within a Free Trade Zone, Dangote produces and sells only high-quality fuels that comply with all regulatory specifications,” the company stated, adding that its products are regularly exported to the United States and Europe, among the most tightly regulated fuel markets in the world.

A Certificate of Quality issued by Phillips 66 Limited in the UK confirmed that the product shipped on September 21, 2025, was indeed an intermediate feedstock — not retail-grade petrol. The refinery further expressed its readiness to make all quality certificates public to ensure full transparency. Reaffirming its mission, Dangote Petroleum Refinery said it remains committed to advancing Nigeria’s energy independence, maintaining top-tier fuel quality, and delivering cleaner energy solutions to both local and international markets.
