The Dangote Refinery has begun exporting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, to countries including Cameroon, Angola, Ghana, and South Africa, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s energy sector.
Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, made this announcement during a visit by a Japanese business delegation led by Japan’s Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Suzuki Hideo. He highlighted that the refinery’s products meet global standards and are making their mark internationally.
“In recent weeks, we’ve exported petrol to Cameroon, Ghana, Angola, and South Africa. Diesel has reached global markets, and jet fuel is being heavily exported to Europe,” Edwin said in a statement released Sunday.
He emphasized the refinery’s unique position as the world’s largest single-train refinery, designed and built entirely by a Nigerian company, Dangote Industries Limited, using cutting-edge global technologies. The refinery is also expanding its polypropylene production to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imports of this essential material.
The Japanese delegation, after touring the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, Petrochemicals, and Fertilizer facilities, hailed the project as a technological marvel. Suzuki Hideo, Japan’s Ambassador-designate, praised the refinery as an example of Nigeria’s growing technological capabilities and its role as Africa’s gateway to the world.
Takashi Oku, Managing Director of the Japan External Trade Organisation, described the refinery as a “remarkable project showcasing Nigeria’s technological progress.” Similarly, Masahiro Tsuno, Managing Director of Itochu Nigeria Limited, called the refinery a “miracle” and one of the wonders of the world.
Edwin highlighted opportunities for collaboration with Japan, given its expertise in advanced technology, noting that Japanese equipment is already integrated into both the refinery and fertilizer plants.
The Dangote Refinery’s ongoing projects aim to drive industrial development, create jobs, reduce foreign exchange outflows, and enhance Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). By leveraging Africa’s crude oil resources to produce refined products locally, the Dangote Group seeks to transform Nigeria into a key player in global energy markets.
The delegation’s visit further underscores the global significance of the Dangote Refinery as a symbol of technological and economic advancement for Nigeria and Africa.
