The Dangote Group has announced plans to become the world’s largest fertiliser producer by 2028, with a major expansion that will boost its annual urea output from about 3 million tonnes to 12 million tonnes.
Chairman Aliko Dangote revealed the plan at the Imo Economic Summit, noting that the company is “investing heavily” to scale its fertiliser operations.
A key part of the expansion is a new partnership with German engineering firm Thyssenkrupp Uhde, which will supply technology for four new urea granulation units at Dangote’s Lagos facility. The additional plants are expected to lift capacity to more than 8 million tonnes per year.
Dangote is also developing a large fertiliser project in Ethiopia under a $2.5 billion agreement, further boosting Africa’s production footprint.
The billionaire industrialist said the push aligns with broader efforts to make Africa self-sufficient in fertiliser production and reduce reliance on imports. He added that recent government policy reforms are helping spur large-scale industrial investment.
If realised, the expansion would position Africa as a major global fertiliser hub and strengthen food-production stability across the continent. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
