The death toll from the terrorist attack on a mosque and nearby homes in Unguwan Mantau, Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, has risen to at least 50, with approximately 60 others abducted, local officials reported on Wednesday.

The assault occurred early on Tuesday during the Fajr (dawn) prayers when armed assailants stormed the mosque, opening fire on worshippers. According to Aminu Ibrahim, a lawmaker representing Malumfashi, 30 worshippers were killed, and 20 others were burned alive in surrounding villages.

The attack is believed to be a reprisal following a successful defense by the community two days earlier, during which local residents ambushed and killed several bandits.

In response, the Katsina State Government has deployed security forces to the area to restore order and prevent further violence. The government has also extended condolences to the victims’ families and assured the community of its commitment to ensuring justice and enhancing security.

The incident underscores the escalating insecurity in northwestern Nigeria, where banditry and communal conflicts over resources have led to numerous attacks on villages and places of worship.
