Five more people in Rwanda have succumbed to the deadly Ebola-like Marburg disease, raising the total number of fatalities to 11, according to the health ministry’s update late Tuesday.

With a fatality rate reaching up to 88 percent, this highly infectious hemorrhagic fever often results in severe bleeding and organ failure. Since the outbreak began on September 27, 29 confirmed cases have been reported, with 19 individuals currently in isolation and receiving treatment.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention noted that many of the cases involve healthcare workers, and over 290 contacts have been traced.

Marburg is part of the filovirus family, which also includes Ebola, known for causing devastating outbreaks in Africa. The virus spreads through contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals.

Rwanda has opted against implementing a lockdown to combat the virus but has advised people to avoid physical contact. While there are no vaccines or antiviral treatments available yet, various potential treatments—including blood products, immune therapies, and early candidate vaccines—are currently under evaluation.
