Vice President Kashim Shettima on Thursday met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN headquarters to discuss urgent issues surrounding regional security, disaster relief, and Nigeria’s role in fostering international cooperation.
Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly, Vice President Shettima was welcomed by UN Deputy Secretary-General, Hajiya Amina Mohammed, with whom he also held a brief meeting.
During his discussions with Secretary-General Guterres, VP Shettima emphasized the need for increased international support to address the effects of climate change and humanitarian crises in Nigeria. He particularly stressed the importance of enhancing relief efforts for flood victims across the country, highlighting the devastation recently suffered by residents of Borno State in North East Nigeria.
“The devastating effects of climate change, especially floods, have caused enormous suffering for many Nigerians. It is vital that we implement enhanced, coordinated relief plans to mitigate the impacts on our people,” Shettima stated, urging for global assistance in stabilizing the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) region, which continues to face challenges.
He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to regional stability and climate resilience, urging the international community to work together in addressing the multifaceted challenges of climate change, security, and disaster management.
In response, UN Secretary-General Guterres expressed his condolences for the losses Nigeria has faced and pledged increased support from the UN. He praised President Tinubu’s leadership and noted Nigeria’s indispensable role in the UN’s efforts to achieve a peaceful and stable Africa. “The UN stands ready to enhance its interventions and support for Nigeria in these difficult times,” Guterres said.
In a separate meeting, VP Shettima met with Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland, where they discussed Nigeria’s continued role within the Commonwealth. Shettima described the Commonwealth as a “family gathering that must be guarded jealously,” affirming Nigeria’s commitment to participate in the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa.
“We are proud of your dedication and success so far in office. You are a trailblazer, and Nigeria will continue to support your leadership,” Shettima said to Scotland.
Hon. Scotland expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s unwavering support, acknowledging its critical role in the Commonwealth’s achievements. “Nigeria’s backing has been instrumental in our successes,” she said.
VP Shettima’s engagements underscore Nigeria’s continued commitment to international cooperation, regional stability, and leadership in tackling global challenges.
