Discos Frustrating Lagos Electricity Control Efforts, Says Commissioner

The Lagos State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, has expressed deep concern over the challenges the state faces in managing its electricity supply due to the actions of electricity distribution companies (Discos). He noted that these companies are hindering the state’s efforts to take control of its electricity distribution, a move that is crucial for improving service delivery and infrastructure development.

Commissioner Ogunleye’s comments come at a time when Lagos is seeking greater autonomy in managing its electricity needs. The state has been grappling with issues such as erratic power supply, high tariffs, and inadequate infrastructure, which have led to public dissatisfaction and calls for reform. Despite these challenges, the Discos have been resistant to the state’s initiatives aimed at improving the situation.

The commissioner emphasized that the state’s efforts are in line with national objectives to enhance the power sector, yet the lack of cooperation from the Discos is a significant impediment. He urged all stakeholders to collaborate towards achieving a more efficient and reliable electricity supply for the residents of Lagos.()

This development underscores the ongoing tensions between state governments and Discos over the control and management of electricity distribution, highlighting the need for comprehensive reforms in the sector.()
