DJ Big N Sounds Alarm: Afrobeats Hits Two-Decade Low Amid Quality Concerns

Nigerian DJ and industry insider Nonso Temisan Ajufo, aka DJ Big N, has raised serious concerns about the current state of Afrobeats on the global stage. Speaking to Echo Room, he described the genre’s decline as its worst in 20 years, attributing the slide to a drop in music quality and originality.

According to DJ Big N, the problem stems from both artists and music executives who diluted Afrobeats to chase international appeal. This strategy backfired, resulting in songs that lack the authentic essence that originally captivated fans worldwide.

He emphasized that to reclaim Afrobeats’ global demand, the genre must remain true to its roots. “You can’t sell foreign genres to foreign audiences,” he said, urging artists to embrace originality over imitation to restore Afrobeats’ unique identity.
