Donald Trump’s campaign reported on Sunday that the former president was unharmed following an incident involving gunshots at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. Trump was on the course, close to his Mar-a-Lago residence, when the shots were fired.

Campaign spokesman Steven Cheung confirmed Trump’s safety, stating, “President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time.”

Local law enforcement detained a “person of interest” and recovered an AK-47 style rifle, according to the New York Times. The Secret Service, which was present as usual, is investigating the incident. There is no indication that Trump was specifically targeted.

This incident follows a recent shooting at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania, which had already raised concerns about the safety of high-profile political figures. The White House confirmed that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were informed and are relieved that Trump is safe.

The Secret Service, under scrutiny after the Pennsylvania incident, is facing renewed questions about its protective measures. Kimberly Cheatle, the agency’s head, resigned amid the fallout from that event.
