The Democratic Republic of Congo has appointed popular football supporter Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, widely known as “Lumumba,” as a national sports ambassador following his viral appearance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Lumumba gained international attention after attending DRC matches dressed as independence hero Patrice Lumumba, standing motionless with his arm raised throughout the games as a powerful symbol of national pride and resilience.

His striking presence became one of the most memorable images of AFCON 2025, drawing admiration from fans across Africa and beyond.

Although the Congolese national team, the Leopards, were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Algeria, Lumumba’s display of patriotism and unwavering support resonated widely.

Officials said his appointment reflects recognition of the role passionate supporters play in promoting unity, culture, and a positive image of the Democratic Republic of Congo on the global stage.
