DSS Invites Datti Baba-Ahmed Over Alleged Inciting Remarks Amid Growing Political Tension

The Department of State Services has invited Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, former running mate to Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, over comments the agency considers inflammatory and capable of heightening national tension. According to security sources, Baba-Ahmed was invited on Friday evening after the DSS reportedly monitored a series of recent public statements in which he alleged that Nigeria was facing a constitutional crisis.

Baba-Ahmed had, in a televised interview days earlier, openly criticised the judiciary and the military, arguing that both institutions failed the nation by allowing the swearing-in of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. A security official, speaking anonymously, accused him of making remarks that could embolden unrest, citing one instance where he claimed the military’s perceived loss of authority stemmed from the inauguration of the current administration.

With the DSS insisting that Baba-Ahmed’s statements carry undertones capable of provoking instability in an already sensitive political environment, the development has sparked fresh debate over free speech, national security, and the limits of political commentary in Nigeria’s democracy.
