The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has condemned in the strongest terms the military coup d’état in Guinea-Bissau, calling for the immediate restoration of constitutional order and the release of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló.
In an extraordinary meeting, regional leaders expressed deep concern over the unconstitutional takeover, warning that such actions threaten peace and stability across West Africa. As part of its response, ECOWAS announced the suspension of Guinea-Bissau from all decision-making organs of the bloc until democratic governance is reinstated.
To facilitate a swift resolution to the crisis, ECOWAS established a high-level mediation mission comprising the presidents of Sierra Leone, Togo, Senegal, and Cape Verde. The delegation is expected to engage all stakeholders in Guinea-Bissau with the aim of restoring stability and ensuring the return of democratic rule.
