The 93rd ordinary session of the Council of Ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) took place on Thursday at the ECOWAS Commission headquarters in Abuja.
Chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, the session focused on key governance, economic policies, and regional integration issues.
In his opening address, ECOWAS President Omar Touray praised President Bola Tinubu and the people of Nigeria for their ongoing support of the regional bloc. However, he highlighted the growing challenges facing the region, emphasizing the timeliness of the Council’s gathering.
Touray informed the Council that 30 specific agenda items—ranging from trade and security to agriculture and stability—would be thoroughly examined.
He also expressed concern over the decline in community remittances over the past six years, noting that only 40% of expected remittances had been received from member states. Touray further commended the peaceful elections held in Liberia, Senegal, Togo, and Ghana this year, underscoring the importance of peaceful democracy in the region.
The ECOWAS President urged member states to reaffirm their commitment to the organization’s core values.
