In one of his first actions as Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo has ordered an immediate suspension of all revenue collection across the state, particularly targeting collections at motor parks and similar locations. This decisive measure, announced just a day after his swearing-in, underscores the governor’s intent to address alleged irregularities in the state’s revenue collection practices.
Governor Okpebholo, alongside his deputy Dennis Idahosa, was sworn in on Tuesday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium by Chief Justice Daniel Okungbowa. Shortly afterward, the governor directed the Commissioner of Police to ensure strict enforcement of the suspension. The directive mandates that anyone found collecting revenue on behalf of the Edo State government will be subject to immediate arrest.
In a statement released by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the governor emphasized the indefinite nature of this suspension. “The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has ordered the immediate and indefinite suspension of all revenue collections in Edo, especially in motor parks and similar areas, until further notice,” the statement read.
Governor Okpebholo further noted that his administration would soon review the underlying issues around revenue collections and determine a new course of action. “The collection of revenues in the state has been suspended indefinitely. Anyone found collecting revenue on behalf of the state government will face arrest,” the statement warned.
The governor’s directive is expected to address widespread public concerns over transparency and alleged exploitation associated with revenue collection in public spaces.
