The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied reports circulating in certain media outlets claiming that former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, is currently in their custody.
In a statement released by the Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC clarified that Bello has not been detained but has instead been declared wanted in connection with an alleged N80.2 billion money laundering case.
“The EFCC wishes to state categorically that Yahaya Bello is not in our custody, contrary to some media reports. However, he has been declared wanted for his alleged involvement in an N80.2 billion money laundering case. We urge the public to disregard any conflicting reports,” Oyewale stated.
The Commission urged the public to provide any useful information that could assist in the apprehension of the former governor, while reaffirming its commitment to the fight against corruption and financial crimes in Nigeria.
Bello, who recently completed his tenure as governor, has been embroiled in a legal battle with the EFCC over alleged financial impropriety during his time in office. He had previously denied any wrongdoing and emphasized his commitment to due process.
The EFCC’s declaration of Bello as wanted signals an escalation in its efforts to prosecute the former governor amid ongoing investigations into the case. The agency has reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring accountability and justice in line with the country’s anti-corruption framework.
Further updates are expected as the investigation unfolds.
