Chairman of United Bank of Africa (UBA), Tony Elumelu, has announced the cancellation of his annual TOE all-white party in honour of the six staff members who lost their lives in the September fire incident at Afriland Towers, Lagos. The deadly blaze, which engulfed the high-rise building on Broad Street, left families, colleagues and the wider business community grieving the sudden loss.

Elumelu, in a statement shared via his Instagram story, said he and his wife, Awele, made the difficult decision to suspend this year’s celebration out of respect for the victims and their loved ones. He noted that the tragedy had cast a dark shadow over what is typically a joyful gathering and emphasised the need to stand in solidarity with those affected.

The cancellation has drawn widespread commendation, with many describing it as a compassionate and dignified gesture from one of Africa’s leading business figures.
