The Enugu State Government has taken a significant step toward achieving sustainable food security by insuring more than 9,000 farmers across the state against agricultural risks during the 2025 wet season.
The initiative, which forms part of the government’s broader agricultural transformation agenda, is being implemented in collaboration with the Harvesting Hope Caravan (HHC) a flagship programme under the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit (PFSCU) in the Office of the Vice President.
Through this partnership, Enugu joins federal efforts to enhance agricultural resilience, boost productivity, and protect farmers from losses caused by climate change, pests, and other farm-related challenges.
Governor Peter Mbah said the state’s proactive measures were designed to restore confidence in the agricultural sector, attract investment, and guarantee food sufficiency.
“Our goal is to make Enugu a model of food security in Nigeria. By insuring our farmers, we are not only protecting their livelihoods but also ensuring that agriculture remains a reliable driver of our state’s economy,” the governor said.
Key partners in the programme include Pula Advisors, Leadway Insurance, and several donor agencies working together to finance premiums and support technical implementation.
As part of the initiative, the government has already begun paying insurance premiums on behalf of registered farmers to cushion the effects of potential crop failure and other risks.
The insurance scheme complements Enugu’s broader agricultural reforms, including plans to establish Farm Estates in all political wards. Under this scheme, the government provides land preparation, inputs, and guaranteed off-take of produce to encourage commercial-scale farming.
Additionally, the state recently launched a Sustainable Food Distribution Programme to support vulnerable households with local food items over a 12-month period.
With these measures, the Enugu State Government continues to strengthen its commitment to agricultural development, rural empowerment, and national food security in line with the Federal Government’s agenda.
