Over 60,000 farmers in Enugu State are set to benefit from the government’s free distribution of 40,000 bags of fertilisers and other agro-inputs, launched by Governor Peter Mbah at Okpara Square.
The initiative is part of a wider plan to boost food production and cut living costs. Governor Mbah said farmers remain the “backbone of society,” and pledged continued support for agriculture.
Key projects include establishing farm estates in all 260 wards, upgrading Enugu State Polytechnic, Iwollo into a University of Agriculture, and expanding mechanisation with over 1,000 tractors expected.
The government also plans 2,000 greenhouses by 2026, a 3,000-hectare cocoa project, and export facilities for cashew. Farmers’ groups and local leaders welcomed the move, calling it a major step toward food security.
