The European Union has launched SCOPE Africa, a €12 million initiative designed to strengthen maritime security and improve port efficiency across West and Central Africa.

Unveiled in Lomé, Togo, the project will run from 2025 to 2029 under the EU’s Global Gateway strategy and will support 10 key ports in nine countries, including Lagos (Nigeria), Lomé (Togo), Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire), Dakar (Senegal), Douala and Kribi (Cameroon), Libreville (Gabon), Monrovia (Liberia), Praia (Cabo Verde), and Pointe-Noire (Republic of the Congo).

Key Aims

Upgrade ports to meet international security and safety standards

Strengthen risk management, emergency response, and cyber-resilience

Improve workforce skills through training

Enhance regional cooperation along maritime corridors

The EU says the programme will help ports cope with rising traffic, tackle security threats, and support smoother, safer trade. For Nigeria, the inclusion of Lagos Port is expected to boost port safety and operational efficiency, improving its role in regional commerce. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
