The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced an ambitious target to achieve full ISO certification for all airports under its management by December 2025, as part of its ongoing efforts to align Nigeria’s aviation operations with global standards.
In a statement issued by the Authority, the initiative seeks to implement two key international standards ISO 9001: Quality Management Systems and ISO 14001: Environmental Management Systems across Nigeria’s airports. These certifications aim to ensure consistent service quality, improved operational efficiency, and greater environmental responsibility.
To drive the process, FAAN has established an ISO Certification Steering Committee responsible for coordinating activities leading up to the certification. The committee will oversee compliance audits, staff training, documentation, and system implementation across all airports.
FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, said the project represents a major step toward enhancing transparency, accountability, and service delivery in the nation’s aviation industry.
“Achieving ISO certification across our airports is a transformative move,” Kuku said. “It underscores our commitment to providing world-class services, improving environmental sustainability, and boosting customer satisfaction.”
She added that the initiative forms part of FAAN’s integrated ISO policy, which aims to institutionalize operational excellence and environmental stewardship within Nigeria’s airport network.
Aviation analysts have welcomed the move, describing it as a significant milestone that could elevate Nigeria’s standing in global aviation circles. They, however, noted that the process would require extensive coordination, infrastructure upgrades, and continuous monitoring to maintain compliance.
If successful, the certification will position Nigeria among the few African nations with fully ISO-compliant airports nationwide a development expected to enhance investor confidence, safety perception, and the overall passenger experience.
