The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Wing of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has officially suspended the industrial action embarked upon by primary school teachers in the territory since March 24, 2025.
According to a communiqué issued after the union’s State Wing Executive Council Meeting held on July 4 and made available to Channels Television on Tuesday, July 8, the suspension comes after the intervention of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Minister Wike was said to have ordered the release of N16 billion for the settlement of part of the outstanding salaries owed to primary school teachers. In light of this development, the NUT has directed all affected teachers to resume duties today, Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
The union expressed its gratitude to its members for their resilience, support, and solidarity throughout the four-month-long strike.
“The union appreciates the teachers for their unwavering support, solidarity and prayers during the strike period,” the communiqué read in part.

The strike, which disrupted academic activities in primary schools across the FCT, was sparked by delays in the payment of salaries and other entitlements. With the release of the funds and the resumption of classes, there is renewed hope for stability in the basic education sector within the territory.
