The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has impounded 40 cars and 52 motorcycles in Abuja as part of a renewed clampdown on unregistered and unpainted commercial vehicles often linked to criminal activities.

The operation, carried out by a joint task force comprising the police, civil defence corps, and the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), also saw four tricycles confiscated. Authorities said the move was aimed at curbing the use of such vehicles in “one-chance” robberies, kidnappings, and other crimes.

Explaining the next steps, the task force disclosed that the seized motorcycles would be crushed once court orders are obtained, while the impounded vehicles will undergo mobile court proceedings to determine appropriate sanctions.

The FCTA further announced plans to enforce stricter regulations in the transport sector, including compulsory registration, proper painting of taxis, issuance of identification numbers, and profiling of commercial drivers. According to officials, this measure is intended to enhance public safety, restore order, and make commercial operators easily identifiable.

Authorities stressed that the enforcement drive would continue until full compliance is achieved, warning that unregistered operators and violators will not be spared.
