The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved ₦142.03 billion for the construction of state-of-the-art bus terminals in each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The decision was reached during Wednesday’s FEC meeting, presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The project, awarded to Planet Project Limited builders of the Oshodi Transport Interchange in Lagos marks the Federal Government’s first direct investment in road transport infrastructure beyond highway construction.

According to Minister of Transportation, Sa’idu Alkali, the initiative addresses a long-standing lack of purpose-built bus terminals, which has contributed to rising crime, road accidents, and the unchecked movement of arms along highways. The modern terminals are expected to improve commuter safety, enhance transport efficiency, and stimulate regional economies.

The terminals will be located in:

Abeokuta (South-West)

Gombe (North-East)

Kano (North-West)

Lokoja (North-Central)

Onitsha (South-East)

Ewu, Edo State (South-South)

Each terminal will feature modern boarding bays, passenger waiting areas, ticketing offices, security facilities, and commercial spaces. The government says the move will create jobs during construction and operation, while laying the groundwork for a safer and more organized national transport network.
