The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the implementation of a Geographic Information System (GIS)-enabled Alphanumeric Digital Postcode System for Nigeria as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s digital and logistics infrastructure.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, disclosed that the new system will introduce a modern, geospatially intelligent addressing framework designed to improve location accuracy and enable faster and more reliable mail and parcel processing across the country.
The initiative will be implemented in collaboration with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), under the leadership of its Postmaster-General, Tola Odeyemi.
According to the minister, beyond enhancing postal operations, the Digital Postcode System will support improved national planning, faster emergency response, more efficient logistics and e-commerce services, as well as better delivery of government services.
He added that the system forms part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to build the infrastructure required to support a modern, inclusive, and globally competitive digital economy.
