The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved Nigeria’s first National Land Transport Policy, a comprehensive framework aimed at improving road safety, expanding infrastructure, and modernizing the country’s transport system.

Announcing the decision in Abuja on Friday, the Minister of Transportation, Said Ahmed Alkali, described the policy as “a historic milestone” that will guide the development of an efficient, integrated, safe and sustainable transport sector.

Modern Bus Terminals and Passenger Safety

As part of the rollout, the government will build six modern bus terminals, one in each geopolitical zone. Each terminal will feature compressed natural gas (CNG) refuelling stations and robust security to curb road accidents often linked to drug abuse and unsafe practices.

To strengthen passenger safety, all intercity buses, whether government owned or privately operated, will be required to operate with passenger manifests before departure.

Boost for Rail Projects

The policy also aligns with ongoing rail expansion. The Port Harcourt to Aba corridor is now operational, while the Kaduna to Kano rail line is scheduled for completion by 2026, with track laying already in progress on the Kano to Katsina branch via Jigawa State.

Driving Growth and Sustainability

Alkali noted that the policy encourages private sector participation and promotes cleaner energy solutions, positioning the transport system to support national development.

“The policy provides the governance framework to reduce accidents, attract investment, and deliver safe, modern mobility for Nigerians in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.
