Federal Government Approves N4.2 Billion for Research and Innovation Hubs in Nigeria’s Tertiary Institutions

The Nigerian Federal Government has approved a substantial N4.2 billion grant to fund 158 research projects in tertiary institutions across the country. This funding, part of the 2024 Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) National Research Fund, is aimed at bolstering the nation’s academic and technological advancements.

The approval came after the TETFund National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee evaluated over 6,900 concept notes submitted by researchers nationwide. The disbursement is segmented into three key thematic areas:

  • Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation: N2,349,951,630.43
  • Humanities and Social Science: N1,028,966,204.32
  • Cross Cutting Research Projects: N870,708,982.94

According to a statement from TETFund’s Director of Public Affairs, Abdulmumin Oniyangi, the initiative will advance research in diverse fields, including eco-friendly housing, hybrid fertilizers, intelligent robotics for agricultural management, and AI-driven health monitoring in combat zones.

Leading Institutions to Benefit from TETFund’s Generous Support

Among the prominent institutions receiving funding, the Federal University of Technology, Minna stands out with 15 awards totaling N400 million. Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria follows with 13 awards worth N359.8 million, while Federal University of Technology, Akure secures N341.6 million for 12 research initiatives.

Other institutions receiving notable support include:

  • Federal University of Technology, Owerri (N256.3 million)
  • Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi (N273.4 million)
  • University of Ilorin (N220.5 million)

These funds are expected to drive research in groundbreaking projects such as eco-friendly walling systems, hybrid fertilizers, and aerial robotics designed for agricultural advancements.

Expansion of Innovation Hubs Nationwide

In a related development, the Federal Government has also approved the establishment of 18 Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hubs across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. These hubs will include cutting-edge facilities for 3D printing, laser technology, robotics, AI, product design, and coding workstations. The goal is to nurture an innovation ecosystem that accelerates research and turns promising ideas into practical solutions.

“The project is intended to facilitate and accelerate the uptake of promising research outputs,” the statement highlighted, further emphasizing that these hubs will cater to multidisciplinary research needs and provide tailored solutions for beneficiary institutions.

Looking to the Future: Additional Funding Allocations for 2025

The Nigerian government has also set its sights on expanding its funding for higher education institutions in 2025. Grants of N1 billion have been allocated to Federal University Dutse, University of Uyo, and University of Ibadan. Meanwhile, 12 other institutions, including Federal Polytechnic Bida and Kano State Polytechnic, will receive N750 million each.
