In an effort to revitalize the aviation industry, the federal government, under President Bola Tinubu, has upgraded the Muhammadu Buhari Airport in Maiduguri to international status.
Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, made the announcement during a courtesy visit from Borno State Governor Babagana Umar Zulum to his office in Abuja on Monday.
Keyamo highlighted the importance of the North-East region, particularly Borno State, as a commercial hub linking Nigeria to other countries. He stated that the airport is set to begin full international operations on January 1, 2025.
“The establishment of an international airport in Maiduguri is strategic for receiving international flights from the Middle East. It has the capacity, size, population, and infrastructure to support its status as an international airport,” Keyamo explained.
He also noted that Borno State’s wealth remains largely untapped, and this development positions northeastern Nigeria for significant economic revival.
During the visit, Governor Zulum expressed his satisfaction with the new status of the Muhammadu Buhari Airport, commending President Tinubu, Keyamo, and the aviation sector for their transformative efforts.
