The Federal Government has approved the Just Transition Guideline and Action Plan (JT GAP), a comprehensive national framework aimed at ensuring that Nigeria’s move toward a low carbon economy remains inclusive, equitable, and consistent with the country’s long term development goals.
The approval was announced at the end of a two day validation workshop in Abuja, where the Director General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Barrister Tenioye Majekodunmi, described the development as a historic milestone in Nigeria’s climate governance journey.
According to Barrister Majekodunmi, the JT GAP, now integrated into Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0), provides a clear roadmap for workforce transition, economic diversification, and the creation of green jobs in critical sectors such as energy, transportation, manufacturing, and nature based industries. She emphasized that these initiatives align with the broader objectives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The NCCC Director General commended the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for their technical assistance throughout the process.
She further noted that attention must now shift from policy validation to effective implementation, calling on all ministries, departments, and stakeholders to collaborate in translating the framework into tangible results that enhance resilience, expand economic opportunities, and secure a sustainable future for all Nigerians.
