Port Harcourt, Nigeria – The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially handed over the newly completed 62-kilometre Port Harcourt-Aba railway project, worth $3.02 billion, to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC). The project is a key section of the larger Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Eastern Narrow Gauge railway, initiated during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to enhance regional connectivity and economic growth.
The handover ceremony, held on Thursday in Port Harcourt, was overseen by Ayo Dada, Project Supervisor from the Federal Ministry of Transportation. Speaking at the event, Dada highlighted the project’s significant impact on passenger mobility between Rivers and Abia states, describing it as a critical step toward boosting local economies.
“The assets handed over include dismantled tracks measuring 283.060 km, rehabilitated and reconstructed 62.800 km of subgrade, and the laying of 62.800 km of rail for the main line,” Dada stated. He also noted the inclusion of 5.690 km of sliding lines and 27 reconstructed turnouts across major stations such as Port Harcourt, Elelenwo, Obuzor, Umugo, and Aba.
Dada emphasized the government’s commitment to completing the remaining Port Harcourt-Maiduguri phase of the railway project. “The contractor has submitted the technical specifications and maintenance manual for the Port Harcourt-Aba section to the consultants. The ministry is determined to see this project foster national development,” he added.
Ben Iloanusi, Managing Director of the NRC, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and the Ministry of Transportation for their dedication to the timely delivery of the project. Represented by NRC Deputy Manager (Civil), Adesegun Ogunade, Iloanusi highlighted the railway’s immediate benefits to Nigerians, particularly in providing affordable and efficient transportation amid economic challenges.
“The operational rail line has already eased transportation costs and improved commuting between Port Harcourt and Aba, making it faster, more convenient, and more affordable for passengers,” he said.
Iloanusi also assured the public of the government’s commitment to completing the remaining sections of the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri line. He emphasized the implementation of robust security measures to protect both passengers and infrastructure, including engaging vigilante groups and deploying other security enhancements coordinated by the presidency and the transport ministry.
The Port Harcourt-Aba railway project is expected to significantly contribute to the socio-economic development of the region, aligning with the government’s vision of modernizing Nigeria’s rail infrastructure to promote national integration and economic growth.
