Federal Government Initiates Evacuation as Maiduguri Faces Severe Flooding

The Federal Government has commenced the evacuation of residents from communities devastated by severe flooding in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. The flooding, which began last weekend and intensified on September 9, 2024, was caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam. A collapse of one of the dam’s spillways significantly increased water flow downstream, worsening the flooding in surrounding areas.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) announced on Tuesday that it is working to provide food, shelter, and medical assistance to flood victims. The Borno State Government has opened Bakassi Camp to accommodate those displaced by the disaster. NEMA’s intervention follows a directive from President Tinubu, who expressed profound concern over the situation and extended his condolences to the affected families.

The flooding has caused substantial damage, submerging major roads, homes, and businesses, and disrupting daily life in Maiduguri. Key infrastructure, including the Shehu’s Palace, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo, has been affected. The floodwaters have breached the wall of a local prison, leading to the drowning of some inmates and the escape of others.

The impact on local communities is severe, with major roads such as Post-Office Roundabout and Custom Road rendered impassable. The Sanda Kyarimi Zoo has also suffered, with 80% of its animals reported dead and the remainder having escaped into the city. Thousands of residents, especially women and children, have been displaced, with many seeking refuge under trees or relocating to safer areas.

Efforts are ongoing to address the humanitarian needs of those affected, as emergency services continue to respond to the crisis.
