The Federal Government has advanced its efforts to enhance the whistleblowing policy by developing a draft bill aimed at providing legal protection and backing for whistleblowers. This initiative seeks to overcome existing challenges and encourage more individuals to report corruption and misconduct within government operations.

At a one-day sensitization workshop on the whistleblowing policy, Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and integrity. He highlighted the policy’s successes since its 2016 launch, noting significant financial recoveries totaling over N83 billion, $609 million, and €5.5 million between 2017 and 2023.

The forthcoming draft bill, which will be presented to the National Assembly, aims to establish a robust legal framework to ensure the protection of whistleblowers, confidentiality of reports, and prompt action on the issues raised. Minister Edun emphasized that the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Administration is committed to enforcing this policy under strict legal compliance to promote good governance.

Permanent Secretary Special Duties, Federal Ministry of Finance, Mr. Okokon Ekanem Udo, acknowledged the policy’s role in uncovering corruption but noted challenges in maintaining momentum and enthusiasm. The sensitization workshop was designed to enhance understanding of the policy and foster cooperation among stakeholders, including Civil Society Organisations and media representatives.

In closing remarks, Permanent Secretary Mrs. Lydia Shehu Jafiya, represented by Director of Human Resources Mr. Olusola Dada, stressed the importance of strengthening whistleblower protection and improving reporting mechanisms to ensure accessibility and effectiveness. The workshop, themed “Issues, Challenges, and Way Forward,” aimed to address these areas and encourage greater participation in the fight against corruption.
