The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting and promoting the interests of Nigeria’s domestic airlines, describing them as vital assets for national development and global competitiveness.

Speaking during the celebration of Air Peace’s inaugural direct flight from Abuja to London Heathrow, Keyamo commended the airline for achieving a historic milestone, noting that the feat demonstrates the potential of Nigerian-owned carriers when provided with the right support and policy environment.

“The government has a duty to support such visionary local businesses,” Keyamo said. “Our aviation policy is focused on building a strong foundation for indigenous airlines to grow, compete, and succeed globally.”

The minister praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as the President’s “vision, foresight, and unwavering support” in advancing the aviation sector, emphasizing that the administration remains determined to create a sustainable environment for local operators.

He outlined several ongoing efforts by the ministry to tackle challenges facing domestic airlines, including limited access to aircraft leasing, multiple taxation, and foreign exchange constraints. According to him, these issues have long hindered growth in the industry, but the government is now addressing them through strategic reforms and international partnerships.

Keyamo added that protecting domestic airlines is not only about safeguarding local investments but also about enhancing Nigeria’s image and influence in global aviation.

“We are committed to ensuring that Nigerian airlines are not just participants but leaders on the international stage,” he said.

The minister also referenced proposed legislation to encourage public officials to patronize Nigerian-owned airlines on international routes a policy aimed at boosting the visibility and revenue base of local carriers.

As Air Peace expands its international operations, Keyamo stressed that the government’s renewed commitment will soon be evident through practical policy actions and continued engagement with industry stakeholders.

“This administration will not relent in supporting our domestic carriers,” he concluded. “They represent the pride and potential of our nation’s aviation industry.” visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
