The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a ruling prohibiting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors, along with the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and Board of Trustees (BoT), from making any changes to or disbanding the Executive Committees of the party in Rivers State.
Justice Peter Lifu delivered the judgment in response to an ex-parte application brought before the court by the Rivers State PDP Executive Committee, led by Aaron Chukwuemeka, alongside representatives from local government and ward committees. The ruling specifically restricts the formation of any interim committees that might replace officials at the state, local government, or ward levels who are loyal to former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.
The court’s decision aims to prevent any actions that would remove or alter the current structure of the PDP’s leadership in Rivers State. This move effectively blocks efforts by PDP Governors, the NWC, and BoT to reconstitute the state’s party leadership, which is perceived to be aligned with Wike.
This ruling comes amid growing tensions within the PDP, as various factions vie for control of party structures in the lead-up to future elections. The Rivers State chapter has been particularly contentious, with loyalists of Wike maintaining a strong influence in the state’s political landscape.
Justice Lifu’s order is seen as a significant legal intervention, preserving the status quo of the Rivers State PDP leadership until further notice, while also reinforcing the autonomy of state-level executive committees within the party’s broader national framework.
