In a major shift in educational policy, the Federal Government has removed the longstanding 18-year minimum age requirement for admission into tertiary institutions nationwide. The change was announced by the recently appointed Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during his inaugural press conference held on Tuesday in Abuja.
Dr. Alausa emphasized that this policy change aims to expand access to higher education and create more inclusive opportunities for Nigerian students, regardless of age. The decision marks a departure from the 18-year age standard that has been in place for nearly two decades.
In addition to the new age policy, the minister reaffirmed the government’s stance on invalidating over 22,700 degree certificates obtained by Nigerians from unaccredited universities in neighboring countries, particularly Togo and Benin Republic. The government deems these institutions “fake” and has warned that the affected degrees will no longer be recognized in Nigeria.
“Ensuring the integrity of our educational system is paramount,” Dr. Alausa stated, highlighting that quality education and accreditation standards remain a priority for the government.
The press conference marks Dr. Alausa’s first major address as Education Minister, signaling the government’s renewed commitment to reforming Nigeria’s higher education landscape.
