The Federal Government of Nigeria has earmarked ₦33.9 billion in the 2026 budget for the rehabilitation and modernization of airports across the country, as part of its commitment to improving aviation infrastructure.
The allocation, which falls under the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, will cover a wide range of projects including:
Repairs to runways, taxiways, and aprons at major airports.
Installation of airfield lighting systems at airports such as Ilorin.
Terminal rehabilitation and expansion at Katsina, Calabar, and Maiduguri airports.
Perimeter security upgrades, including fencing and access roads.
Rehabilitation of airstrips in Hadejia, Osubi, Ibru‑Edo, and Uli‑Okija.
Enhancements to safety, security, and power systems, as well as modern airport facilities like baggage handling and passenger bridges.
This funding forms part of a broader ₦87.3 billion allocation for aviation infrastructure and agencies in the 2026 budget. Notably, the planned national carrier, Nigeria Air, did not receive budgetary support this year, signaling a government focus on infrastructure rather than airline operations.
Officials say the upgrades are expected to enhance safety, improve passenger experience, and boost operational efficiency at Nigerian airports, supporting economic growth and positioning the country as a regional aviation hub. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
