President Bola Tinubu has appointed Opeyemi Agbaje as the new Chairman of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), following a seven-day ultimatum issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). The NLC had demanded the immediate constitution of PenCom’s governing board, warning of industrial action if the request was not met. The appointment was confirmed by Agbaje himself in a statement to the Peoples Gazette on August 16, 2025.
Agbaje, a strategic policy analyst and CEO of RTC Advisory Services Limited, brings extensive experience in economic policy analysis. He previously served on the board of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund between 2011 and 2019. His appointment is seen as a response to the NLC’s pressure, which had highlighted the legal requirement for a tripartite board to oversee pension funds and prevent potential mismanagement.
While the Federal Government has yet to issue an official statement, Agbaje’s appointment is expected to address the governance gap at PenCom and restore stakeholder confidence in the management of Nigeria’s pension assets.
