The Federal Government has banned the collection of taxes and levies on highways and roadblocks across the country, declaring such practices illegal under the new tax administration framework.
The decision was announced following the signing of new regulations by the Joint Revenue Board at the Federal Ministry of Finance. The government said the move is aimed at ending arbitrary and informal revenue collection methods that have burdened motorists, traders, and small business operators.
Under the new directive, all forms of roadside tax enforcement and cash collections are prohibited nationwide. Authorities stated that tax payments must now follow approved and transparent channels as part of efforts to modernise the system and promote accountability.
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, said the reform marks a shift toward structured implementation of tax policies designed to widen the tax base while eliminating harassment and multiple taxation on highways.
