FG Boosts Skills Development With First TVET Payments – But Will Direct Support to Students and Training Centres Transform Nigeria’s Workforce?

Share

The Federal Government has launched the first tranche of direct financial payments under its Technical and Vocational Education and Training Initiative, delivering support to more than 42,000 students and over 600 independent training centres nationwide. The payments mark a significant step in the administration’s drive to strengthen skills acquisition and expand opportunities for young Nigerians.

Each of the 42,000 beneficiaries has received a monthly stipend of N22,500 to ease upkeep and transportation costs, allowing trainees to focus fully on their vocational programmes without the burden of financial constraints. At the same time, more than 600 private and independent TVET centres have been paid for providing technical instruction and hands-on learning, ensuring quality delivery and uninterrupted training cycles across the country.

This disbursement signals the start of a long-term funding commitment, with additional tranches expected to follow as the initiative progresses. As implementation gathers momentum, the critical question is: will this direct investment in skills training drive the workforce transformation Nigeria urgently needs?
