The Federal Government has disbursed nearly N50 billion directly to Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across Nigeria through the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF), according to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate. The minister disclosed this on Monday via his official X handle, noting that the intervention is part of President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s push to strengthen the nation’s healthcare system.
Pate revealed that in addition to the direct disbursement, over N20 billion has been released for the rehabilitation and upgrade of 4,362 PHCs across the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, with similar initiatives also impacting facilities in the southern region. He explained that the BHCPF — financed by at least one percent of the Consolidated Revenue Fund and donor contributions — provides a Basic Minimum Package of Health Services designed to modernise health infrastructure nationwide.
Highlighting progress on healthcare access, the minister stated that more than 37 million visits to PHCs were recorded in the first quarter of 2025 alone, describing the achievement as evidence of a “data-driven re-engineering” of service delivery. He also noted that enrollment under the government’s health insurance programme is set to surpass the 2024 milestone of 2.4 million citizens later this year, further expanding coverage and access for Nigerians.
