FG Expresses Sympathy to South Korea Over Plane Crash that Killed 179

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sympathy to the Government and people of South Korea following the devastating crash of Jeju Air Flight 2216, which tragically claimed the lives of approximately 179 passengers.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, on Sunday in Abuja, the Nigerian government extended its heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and expressed solidarity with South Korea during this difficult time.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, December 29, 2024, when the Boeing 737-800, which had been returning from Bangkok, Thailand, attempted to land at Muan International Airport in southern South Korea. The aircraft skidded off the runway and collided with a wall, resulting in a fiery explosion. Of the 181 passengers and crew aboard, 179 tragically lost their lives, leaving only two survivors.

Describing the crash as an immense tragedy, the Nigerian Government reaffirmed its unwavering support for the people of South Korea.

“The Federal Republic of Nigeria wishes to extend its sincere condolences to the Government and People of the Republic of Korea for the heartbreaking crash of Jeju Air Flight 2216 on Sunday, December 29, 2024. The Federal Government of Nigeria stands in sympathy with the Government of South Korea and the families of the victims,” the statement read.
