The Federal Government has established a 10-man Inter-Ministerial Committee to implement the Supreme Court’s July 11, 2024, ruling on local government financial autonomy.

Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), chairs the committee, which includes key officials such as the Minister of Finance, the Attorney General, and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. The group also features representatives from state and local governments.

The committee’s mission is to ensure local governments receive full autonomy, enhancing their operational independence from state control. This initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to uphold constitutional provisions recognizing local governments as a vital third tier of administration.
