FG Launches ECOWAS Biometric ID to Boost Security and Ease Travel

Share

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC) to enhance regional security and ease travel within West Africa.

The card, which uses biometric data, aims to curb document fraud, strengthen border control, and facilitate trade, tourism, and labour mobility across ECOWAS member states. Citizens can use it for intra-regional travel, potentially replacing passports.

Nigeria is the seventh ECOWAS country to implement the system. Officials say its success depends on efficient card distribution and integration with existing immigration processes. The government also plans to introduce a “Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP)” for Nigerians abroad in January 2026. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
