The Federal Government has unveiled the Nigeria Postharvest Systems Transformation Programme (NiPHaST), a landmark initiative aimed at curbing the estimated ₦3.5 trillion lost annually to post-harvest waste. The programme was launched by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security during the Nigeria Legacy Programme at the Africa Food Systems Forum in Dakar, Senegal, in collaboration with the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA).
NiPHaST is designed to build a more efficient and resilient post-harvest system through strategic investments in household storage technologies, community warehouses, cold rooms, and national silos under public–private partnerships. It also prioritises improvements in processing, preservation, packaging, and climate-smart infrastructure, including metal silos and cold storage facilities.
Agriculture Minister, Senator Abubakar Kyari, explained that the programme would help stabilise food prices, improve availability and affordability of staples, boost farmer incomes, create jobs, and strengthen Nigeria’s food sovereignty. He noted that post-harvest losses are not only wasted produce but also represent missed opportunities and shattered livelihoods.
By unlocking private-sector investment and restoring confidence in agribusiness, NiPHaST is expected to transform Nigeria’s food security landscape and position the country as a leading supplier of food across West Africa.
