FG Moves to Review Salaries of Political Office Holders, Says Current Pay ‘Outdated and Inadequate’

The Federal Government is considering an upward review of salaries for political office holders. The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) announced plans to reassess the remuneration of top government officials, arguing that the current pay structure is outdated, inadequate, and does not reflect the rising responsibilities and economic realities.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, RMAFC Chairman Mohammed Shehu disclosed that President Bola Tinubu currently earns ₦1.5 million monthly, while ministers receive less than ₦1 million each month—figures that have remained unchanged since 2008. He noted the imbalance in the system, where heads of certain agencies and parastatals take home salaries several times higher than what the President, ministers, and the Attorney-General of the Federation earn.

Shehu explained that the review would focus strictly on political office holders such as the President, governors, ministers, legislators, and directors-general. He stressed the need for “reasonable living salaries” to enhance performance and reduce the temptation of corrupt practices. He added that the broader review of the revenue allocation formula would also reflect emerging socio-economic realities, strengthen fiscal federalism, and promote economic independence for states while ensuring fairness and sustainability.
