The Federal Government has reaffirmed ranching as a central component of its livestock development strategy, following an inspection of Manchong Integrated Farms Limited in Nasarawa State by the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha.
During the visit, the minister and a team of officials assessed the farm’s operations, including cattle breeding, fodder production, and pasture management, highlighting the facility as a model for modern livestock practices across Nigeria. Despite the challenges of the dry season, the farm maintained lush pastures through sustainable irrigation techniques, demonstrating effective methods for year-round livestock production.
Minister Maiha emphasized that the farm would serve as a pilot center for genetic improvement and breeding programs, as well as a hub for fodder seed production to support livestock farmers nationwide.
“Ranching is not only vital for increasing livestock productivity but also essential in reducing farmer-herder conflicts and promoting sustainable agriculture,” the minister stated.
Nasarawa State has actively supported the Federal Government’s ranching initiative by providing land and resources for model farms aimed at curbing open grazing clashes and ensuring rural peace. Several other states have also embraced the program, aligning with national efforts to modernize livestock farming and strengthen food security.
The minister’s visit underscores the government’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s livestock sector through innovative, sustainable, and conflict-reducing practices, positioning ranching as a cornerstone of the nation’s agricultural development strategy. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
