In a significant step toward transforming Nigeria’s agricultural sector, the federal government has taken delivery of the first batch of 2,000 tractors from Belarus. This move aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to modernize farming practices and enhance food production across the country.
The heavy-duty equipment, which arrived in Nigeria, has been assembled in Abuja and marks a pivotal moment in the government’s efforts to revolutionize agriculture. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, hailed the development as a major milestone, emphasizing its role in advancing agricultural modernization, boosting productivity, and ensuring food security for all Nigerians.

To ensure widespread accessibility and impact, the tractors will be distributed through three strategic schemes:
The initiative stems from the Nigeria-Belarus mechanization partnership, formalized in September 2024, which aims to equip Nigerian farmers with advanced tools and machinery. Each of the 2,000 tractors will be accompanied by 9,072 assorted agricultural implements, designed to support a wide range of farming operations.
- Direct Purchase: Individuals and organizations can acquire tractors outright.
- Leasing Scheme: Farmers can access mechanized equipment at affordable rates without the burden of full ownership costs.
- Service Provider Model: Tractor service centers will be established in farming communities, allowing smallholder farmers to lease equipment as needed.
This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to empowering farmers, enhancing agricultural efficiency, and driving Nigeria toward self-sufficiency in food production.
