The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a remarkable 300 percent increase in tourism revenue, exceeding earlier projections and highlighting the sector’s growing contribution to the national economy.
According to the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR), tourism has emerged as one of the leading sources of employment in Nigeria, second only to agriculture. The surge underscores the sector’s potential to drive economic diversification and sustainable growth.
NIHOTOUR’s Director-General, Abisoye Fagade, revealed the figures during an event hosted by private-sector firm Style De Vie, which aims to strengthen cultural and economic ties across African countries. Fagade described tourism as “a social bitcoin,” emphasizing its ability to generate revenue, create jobs, and provide value-added services if properly harnessed.
He further called for increased investment in tourism infrastructure and services to sustain the sector’s momentum and ensure long-term growth for Nigeria’s tourism industry.
