The Federal Government has secured about N250 billion in funding to develop light rail systems in Kaduna and Kano States, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, announced on Monday in Abuja.
Speaking at a World Press Conference, Idris said President Bola Tinubu is committed to driving balanced development across all regions of the country, with an emphasis on infrastructure that spurs economic growth.
“Contrary to the perception being pushed at some quarters, this administration has demonstrated uncommon commitment to balanced and inclusive development since assuming office,” Idris said. “The distribution of capital projects under President Bola Tinubu is equitable. No zone is taking a back seat.”
The minister disclosed that the Federal Government had secured N150 billion for the Kano light rail project and N100 billion for the Kaduna light rail system. He added that these projects are part of a broader push to strengthen subnational development.
“Local Government Areas are also being fiscally reintegrated as catalysts for growth and development, with the financial autonomy that the President is determined to fully make operational,” he said.
According to Idris, all state governments now receive significantly more revenue from the federation account compared to previous years. He linked this to fiscal reforms driven by the removal of fuel subsidies, which he said had expanded revenue opportunities.
“Thanks to the increased headroom from the oil subsidy removal, the sub-national governments are now able to do a lot more and with less debt,” the minister said.
The projects in Kaduna and Kano are expected to enhance urban mobility, boost local economies, and demonstrate the administration’s commitment to equitable development across Nigeria.
