The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to reclaim Nigeria’s position among the world’s leading cocoa producers. The announcement was made by Senator Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, at the International Cocoa and Chocolate Forum (ICCF 2026) in London.
Under the banner “Reclaiming Value, Shaping Rules: Nigeria’s Vision for Cocoa Sovereignty,” the government highlighted the country’s fertile soils, favorable climate, and rich farming traditions as key advantages for boosting cocoa output.
The strategy focuses not only on increasing production but also on promoting sustainable growth, attracting foreign investment, and expanding trade, including leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and adhering to international environmental standards such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
“This initiative is central to Nigeria’s economic diversification, job creation, and food security agenda,” Minister Kyari stated.
In line with this vision, the FG has proposed establishing a National Cocoa Management Board to regulate and develop the sector, aiming to compete directly with global leaders such as Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.
Recent trends suggest strong potential: Nigeria’s cocoa exports surged in late 2024, reflecting growing global demand and increased domestic production. The government hopes these measures will restore the country’s prominence in the international cocoa market. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
